System 3 has officially revealed a early playable technology and graphics demonstration of Putty World at the Tokyo Game Show, offering a first look at the studio's new "What If?" approach to retro game development. Scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in Q2 2027, the ambitious project revisits the beloved platforming series through the lens of modern processing capabilities.
The core concept behind Putty World stems from a simple premise: what if Nintendo Switch 2 hardware had existed during the mid-1990s transition period from 2D rendered animation to 3D polygon graphics? System 3 founder and CEO Mark Cale explained that the new "What If?" series allows the original creative team to revisit their vision without the technical hardware restrictions of the era, combining classic character humor with fluid modern performance.
The upcoming title connects the worlds of Putty, Super Putty, and Putty Squad into one cohesive gameplay experience. As players progress, they will unlock recreated and updated levels across the franchise. The game is planned to feature 75 new or extensively updated levels, over 45 new enemies with expanded behavior patterns, dedicated boss encounters, and a revamped protagonist model sporting over 50 dynamic facial expressions.
At gamescom, System 3 showcased the visual leap by directly comparing the Nintendo Switch release of Putty Squad with Putty World running on Nintendo Switch 2. The upgraded version highlights completely remade graphical assets, enhanced character renders, richer animation, and modernized dual-stick controls. The studio is targeting a stable 60 frames-per-second performance output, supporting 1080p resolution in handheld mode and up to 4K when docked to a television.
