Weather the Swarm is a brand-new 2D sci-fi run-and-gun roguelike set to launch in the first half of 2027, bringing chaotic couch co-op action and fully destructible environments to players on PC and consoles. Developed by Italian indie studio Beatrate, the title combines classic arcade shooting with modern procedural mechanics and deep character progression. The game will initially launch on Steam, with Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch releases scheduled to follow.
Taking on the role of space-faring mercenaries, up to four players can fly, shoot, and loot their way across hostile alien worlds. Players are equipped with a permanent jetpack, giving movement a fresh, airborne dynamic as they navigate biomes consisting of four distinct levels capped by a major boss battle. Defeating each planetary boss unlocks access to new worlds featuring escalating challenges. Throughout each run, procedural level generation ensures that no two playthroughs feel the same, while fully destructible terrain allows players to carve out tactical advantages.
Character builds rely on a rich array of randomized perk choices, weapons, and utility items. Players can customize their playstyle with flamethrowers, machine guns, invisibility cloaks, or healing pods, upgrading their gear at scattered shops to unlock additional passive abilities. Adding to the tension, relentless swarms of alien enemies attack periodically, becoming increasingly formidable over time. This mechanic forces teams to carefully balance the search for high-tier loot against the constant risk of being overwhelmed by unbeatable hordes.
Beatrate designed the game specifically to revive the nostalgic thrill of local multiplayer nights with friends. In addition to offline couch co-op, the game will feature Steam Remote Play Together, allowing four friends to jump into the action using a single copy. The core experience remains equally tuned for solo players who prefer to hone their builds alone. Alpha testing for the game is already underway on the developer's official community servers ahead of its full debut next year.
