Lionsgate and acclaimed horror developer Bloober Team have officially unveiled Saw: Genesis, a twisted new asymmetrical multiplayer video game set within the iconic Saw cinematic universe. Announced during the annual Summer Game Fest, the upcoming title is being built in collaboration with co-development label Broken Mirror Games and Anshar Studios, leveraging Bloober Team’s established expertise in psychological horror.

The game features a unique storyline that directly precedes the events of the original Saw films, exploring the dark history that ultimately influenced Jigsaw and his elaborate psychological games. Set in the grim aftermath of World War I, Saw: Genesis introduces a distinct 3v1 multiplayer mechanic grounded in the survival logic of the franchise. In each match, three players take on the role of the "Accused," who must work together to escape a potentially fatal labyrinth of traps. Meanwhile, a single player controls the "Judge"—the figure whose early work inspired Jigsaw—orchestrating the trials from behind the scenes, imposing diabolical tests, and forcing impossible moral choices under intense time pressure.

Matches will take place across procedurally generated maps, ensuring that the layout of the lethal traps and escape routes remains entirely unpredictable. "Multiplayer in the SAW universe is a natural evolution of its core theme - moral choices - now amplified in a shared, unpredictable setting," stated Piotr Babieno of Bloober Team, highlighting that the psychological tension is driven entirely by player interaction and consequence.

Erika N. Ewing, Senior Director of Interactive Ventures & Games at Lionsgate, expressed excitement for the prequel chapter, noting that it remains authentic to the franchise's trademark life-or-death choices and complex traps. Designed to evoke a visceral sense of fear, the game will offer public access ahead of its official launch. Players interested in testing the initial build can now register for the upcoming Closed Alpha testing phases on the game's official website, ahead of its planned Early Access launch on major platforms later this autumn.
