The "cozy gaming" movement is about to get a mechanical upgrade. UK-based developer Foulball Hangover has announced that its acclaimed sandbox mining and base-building title, Hydroneer, is making the leap to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 8th, 2026.
Since its initial PC release in 2020, Hydroneer has carved out a unique niche in the simulation genre, fueled in part by its viral popularity on platforms like YouTube. Now, console players will get to experience the game’s distinct brand of "weekend engineering" from the comfort of their sofas.
A Different Kind of Industrial Revolution
Unlike many automation games that rely on abstract menus and massive inventories, Hydroneer leans into a tactile, physics-based reality. There is no traditional inventory system; if you want to move an object, you carry it with your own two hands.
The gameplay loop begins simply with a bucket and a shovel, but quickly scales into a complex feat of hydraulic engineering. To grow your wealth, you must design and build intricate networks of pipes, conveyor belts, and drills. Whether you’re creating a basic "Point A to Point B" setup or a massive, multi-junction factory, the focus remains on the relaxing, immersive experience of building how—and where—you want.
Bringing Back the Split-Screen
The most significant addition for the console debut is the inclusion of up to 4-player couch co-op. While split-screen gaming has seen a decline in recent years, Foulball Hangover founder and CEO Max Hayon sees it as the heart of the console experience.
“Everyone can build, dig, or fish at their own pace,” Hayon notes. “It becomes a very pop-in experience, something that we feel is perfect for bringing multiplayer back into the living room with friends.”
The Complete Package
The console launch will include six years of content updates and polish from the PC version. Additionally, the Journey to Volcalidus expansion will be available at launch (sold separately), introducing a new volcanic environment and powerful lava-powered machinery.
Whether you are a master engineer or just looking for a relaxing way to spend a Saturday, Hydroneer offers a boundary-free sandbox where the only limit is your own mechanical creativity. Look for it on the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores this May.
