The world of high fantasy is about to get a lot larger. During Sony’s latest State of Play, KRAFTON officially pulled back the curtain on Project Windless, an ambitious open-world action RPG developed by its Montréal Studio. Based on Lee Yeong-do’s landmark Korean novel series, The Bird That Drinks Tears, this premium single-player title promises a visceral, player-driven epic built on Unreal Engine 5.
A Continent-Spanning Legend
Set 1,500 years before the events of the original novels, Project Windless explores a mythical age where legends are forged in real-time. Players step into the role of the Hero King, a mighty warrior of the Rekon race—towering, avian humanoids known for their ferocity and overwhelming strength. Armed with twin star-forged blades, players will cut through dozens of foes simultaneously, shaping the foundations of a future kingdom through exploration, combat, and political alliances.
Massive Battles, Personal Action
What sets Project Windless apart is its proprietary Mass Technology. This engine allows thousands of soldiers and gargantuan creatures to clash on dynamic battlefields without sacrificing the precision of skill-based, real-time combat. Unlike traditional strategy games, you aren't a distant commander; you are a legendary figure fighting in the heart of the fray.
"Legend is not something you observe, it is something you actively create through play," says Patrik Méthé, Creative Director and Head of KRAFTON Montréal Studio. This philosophy is reflected in the game’s non-linear structure, where player decisions directly influence how wars unfold and how history is written.
A Rich Cultural Tapestry
The game features four distinct intelligent races—Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi—each possessing unique worldviews and cultural conflicts inspired by Korean mythology. By partnering KRAFTON’s North American AAA expertise with their South Korean creative teams, the studio aims to deliver a world that feels both authentically Korean and globally accessible.
Currently in development for PC and consoles, Project Windless is a strictly single-player experience with no live-service elements.
