Be it with a remaster, honest remake, or simply a re-release. Recently we had the likes of the Tomb Raider I – III Remasters from Aspyr, which I love, and plenty more which have made fans happy. And now Aspyr is at it again, with a remaster of not one, but two of the best action multiplayer games ever made. Star Wars: Battlefront I and II, both from 2004, and 2005 respectively were instant classics, and have loyal fans who love them to this day. I still have my copy of SW: BF2 for the PS2, and it’s great. So, a remaster, from the same guys who brought back Lara Croft in amazing glory, of two of the best action, and best-ever Star Wars games ever made is a surefire hit right? Be it a fascination with spooky stories, an interest in unsolved murders, or a taste for almighty Hammer Horror gore. And it’s no different for gaming, with Resident Evil, Dead Space and in recent gaming history, Outlast, leaving a rather big bloody mark on the gaming scene. Outlast takes much of the horror and gore to an extreme level, providing compelling thematic scares, intense brutality and spookier cliches than a Creepy Pasta thread. With two single-player ventures released within the last decade, it feels like an appropriate move to turn things on its head for The Outlast Trials, where rather than surviving the insanity and torture alone, you can bring a few friends along for the wild ride. But it’s something we need to address, and people are. Through films, TV and books, the concept of the ending of days has been done every which way but loose. But it’s coming up more and more into gaming, or be it, more and more relatable. We’ve seen fungal zombie plagues, the Fallout aftermath of nuclear war, and very dramatic versions of alien invasions. But how about the simple thought of a flood? A Flood, mixed in with indie vibes, indie music, turn-based combat and a journey of self-discovery and appreciation of what you have? Well, here’s Highwater for you. Upon its original release onto 8th-generation consoles, it was met with critical acclaim and made Josef Fares decide his passion and ambition should be game design over filmmaking, a wise choice indeed. But the original is widely available and easy to pick up and play, so I thought there might be something quite significant with this remake. Is there? Well, yes and no, and I’m both delighted there is a nice new version of this fantastic game, but also disappointed with the feeling it just feels like it’s a product of the remake trend. But there was a time (the glorious 1990s) when Lara Croft used to rule the world thanks to her mega-hit game series Tomb Raider. Everyone knew and loved Lara Croft, through the games, marketing and her glamour Girl status. It’s somewhat odd but funny to look back at that in particular, but Lara was so much more. She was a strong female protagonist, a leading lady with brains and brawn, a great role model, and just an all-around icon. And even after 25 years, the original trilogy is held in high regard, even as the series evolved/rebooted several times. While Crystal Dynamics works on the next mainline Tomb Raider game, we have been blessed with a remaster of the original trilogy thanks to Aspyr. Lone Survivor, Tormented Souls, and Echoes of the Living are to name a few. But the one that really stands out in recent memory is Casper Croes golden age-inspired survival horror, Alisa. I reviewed this back in early 2022 and was thoroughly delighted at the pin-point late 90’s survival horror aesthetics, interesting dynamics, sense of challenge and general creepy vibes pulled off. Revisiting the game now that it’s launched for consoles, I have some new thoughts, but mostly the same admiration as before for the creation of this charming and spooky, doll-infested survival horror. My first few minutes with the game felt like a bloody combination of Robocop, Tank Girl, and a bunch of 90s games such as Skyblazer, where our beaten and broken protagonist sees the love of their life being taken away by a bunch of nasty villains. And like any great retro game, it’s time to embark on a grand venture of grime, grit, blood, sweat and plenty of tears, as Cookie Cutter is quite frankly 2024’s most bada** Metroidvania. On the one hand, it can be seen as simple entertainment, watching “real” people engaging in “real” world events and dramas. But then there is of course a strange Orwellian trait to the sheer concept of watching “real” people for entertainment, despite all the inner workings and shady interlinks behind the scenes. There have been a few films and shows that tackle the subject, with some great like The Truman Show, and others not so much like Ed TV (remember that? No?). American Arcadia might be one of the few video game counterparts to the likes of The Truman Show, and in all fairness, it has the potential to be a timeless classic. The chaotic, co-op moving game peaked at a time when people had to huddle together in isolation (God wasn’t COVID fun!) and work together in the most outrageous ways possible. And was definitely a game that broke many friendships, and relationships and tested the patience of even the saintliest of saints! But was also a massively over-the-top, enjoyable and light-hearted couch co-op adventure that gave a perfect balance of joy and anger, just like Dark Souls does. Moving Out 2 is the sequel we never knew we needed, and is determined to do everything as mentioned above once again, and then some! That’s incredibly disheartening to hear, but seeing so many people doing their part to preserve classic video games fills me with hope and seeing the guys over at Antstream Arcade bring together the impossible, that being so many classic games in a streaming-like service (Gaming Netflix which is better than … Gaming Netflix) and have it run quite smoothly is amazing! I look at possibly the future of classic video game preservation, outside of owning the decades-old consoles, or emulating (but that’s frowned upon by certain multi-billion-dollar family-friendly corporations….). Games like Resident Evil 4, Half-Life 2, The Last of US, GTA 5, and Elden Ring are important games to gamers and the industry. Game changers and breakers of the mould that shaped the very landscape. Yet, there are far fewer games which truly push the idea of what gaming can do, even to unnerve the core of elite designers, and make them sweat in their boots. I’m talking about a game so ambitious, so monumental in scope and scale that it’s phenomenal, and especially so coming out at the right time, when gamers need that reassurance from corporate greed and seeing an underdog rise above so many gaming elitists. I’m talking about Baldur’s Gate 3. Although there are some things we can surely do, like going out into the wilderness and trying to survive off the land … I wouldn’t recommend that at all. Best do it in gaming, and likely survival games are a dime and a dozen nowadays. The genre has become one of the most popular in recent memory and it’s not slowing down, despite the hundreds of games already. However, it takes something special to stand out in the crowd, and the immense survival scene today, but I may have found one of the most innovative, compelling, and chilled of the genre! The last few years have been interesting for the Hitman series, with the 2015 reboot coming from the ashes of 2012’s Hitman Absolution, and each of the 3 Hitman games since then having peculiar releases. The first Hitman was released in episodic format, to changing publishers and the final chapter coming out at the tail end of the pandemic. I myself was more heavily involved with the boom of shooters from the early to mid-2000s, featuring some of the best ever made. From Half-Life 2, World at War, DOOM 3, and one of the greatest First Person Shooters ever made F.E.A.R. There was something truly immense and magical for F.E.A.R and every element of it alone was great, but combined made one of the most breathless, ruthless, and spectacular games ever made. Now a young studio has decided Boomer Shooters have had their glory, and now it’s time for the return of immense, spectacle-driven shooters. I introduce you to Trepang2. As a leading independent studio, they have quite a robust portfolio of horror games, and whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny the talent and creative force there. This is why they were picked for the Silent Hill 2 remake of course, and to pass the time till then, we have a full remake of not one, but two of their previous games, with extra content on the side. The idea of trains in gaming is even better, with some of the best level design and set pieces in gaming being set on trains (Golden Eye, Gears of War). And puzzles make up a core component of many great game types including adventure and survival horror games (Resident Evil and Tomb Raider). But what if you combine both trains and puzzles? Well, you get Railbound of course! I was never a fan of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, nor am I a fan of horror games where you run away, cower in fear, and hide in cupboards without a proper means of defence. That is not my jam, but I always held the original Amnesia in high regard due to its level of intensity and story. But felt it could do more with the foundation. Frictional Games have dipped their toes in other ventures and a more story-driven Amnesia game which didn’t set the world on fire. But now I feel (and hopefully many others will too) that they have struck gold with this entry, by going back to their roots! Arkane is made up of several studios that have each brought us some of the best games in the last decade, including one of the best games ever made in my opinion, Arkane Austin’s PREY. The same studio and creatives revealed in an Xbox direct a few years ago a brand-new IP that looked to be a mix of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” and Left4Dead. But over the course of the next couple of years, came a picture that Arkane Austin was looking to create their take on the modern Farcry games. An interesting sounding concept, and one which I had mixed feelings on but remained quite optimistic that the studio which brought us one of the greatest immersive sims of all time, could bring us a cool, and thought-provoking vampire game. … it breaks my heart to tell you that, they did not succeed. At this point in time, there are very few zombie games, however, which really push the focus away from the undead flesh eaters, and tap more into the human elements. Interestingly enough, the original Dead Island announcement trailer aimed to change things back in the early 2010s, but when it came out… it was a humdrum, yet enjoyable zombie game. The trailer for Dead Island decided to switch things up and relish in the dark comedy elements and gore, with another great trailer.
