Artistic Director and founder of Cardboard Citizens, Adrian Jackson, talks about Cathy, in a new video, alongside cast members Alex Jones, Amy Loughton, Cathy Owen and Hayley Wareham.
Inspired by Ken Loach and Jeremy Sandford’s ground-breaking film Cathy Come Home, the production continues Cardboard Citizens’ exploration of the state of housing and homelessness. This powerful and emotive play, by award-winning playwright Ali Taylor (Goth Weekend, Cotton Wool, OVERSPILL) and directed by Cardboard Citizens’ Artistic Director Adrian Jackson, imagines a Cathy for the modern age. Based on true stories, the timely drama explores the impact of spiralling social housing costs, gentrification and the challenges of forced relocation through the compelling story of one family. Its story has proved so pertinent, the production was invited to play at both the House of Lords and as part of the Labour Party Conference.
Cardboard Citizens is an award-winning theatre company and one of the world’s leading practitioners of Forum Theatre. It has toured across hostels, day centres and prisons for the past 26 years, bringing theatre to the most marginalised in society. Through bold and immersive theatre, Cardboard Citizens break down conventional divisions between audiences and performers.
The production is currently playing at Soho Theatre until 14 April, before touring to Glasgow, Cardiff, Swansea, Milford Haven, Aberystwyth and London’s Albany Theatre.
